THE NOT SO 'ADARSH' SOCIETY

Going by the infamous proverb "what's there in a name?" this society does seem to be supporting the statement, because the recent scam of Adarsh co-operative society does prove that it is not really of the kind what it's name depicts.

This society is built near Colaba, Mumbai which was supposedly the land alloted to the families of the martyrs of the Kargil war. There have been names of many top army officials, politicians and bureaucrats involved in this scam, among which the major being the Cheif Minister of Maharashtra Mr. Ashok Chavan. Talking about the piece of land or rather the illegaly occupied land, the flats here cost around Rs. 8 crores, but the members of this society bought it for around Rs. 60 lakhs.

The major risk involving it is that there are two defence facilities located near it which can be targeted as soft points by terrorists, one being an armoured vehicles artillery and the other being a depot of ammunition, explosives etc. In this locality other constructions are not allowed to construct more than 7 storeys but this society has been built of 31 storeys. This shows the level of corruption and bureaucracy involved in our system, which is not highlited and is being ignored. Siting this controversy, the Maharashtra CM has even offered to step down and a probe has been ordered into the case.

A few names have already crept up for the race to become the next CM, but the point is will his successor be able to give justice to the families of the martyrs or he himself be involved in a similar scam. This highlights the need for a better leadership and awarness among the people.
